Plant and Soil Science Systems

This pathway focuses on the scientific principles that underlie the breeding, cultivation, and production of agricultural plants, and the production, processing, and distribution of agricultural plant products. Includes instruction in the plant sciences, crop cultivation and production, soil science, and agricultural and food products processing.

First Course:

Principles of Agriculture (Required Prerequisite to all other classes)

This course will cover the diversity of the agricultural industry and agribusiness concepts. Students will develop an understanding and the role of agriculture in the United States and globally. Topics covered in the course range from animals, plants, food, natural resources, ag power, structures, and technology, as well as careers.

  • Freshmen and Sophomores
  • 2 Semesters (1 credit per semester)
  • Dual Credit with Ivy Tech

Second Course:

Plant and Soil Science

This course includes hands-on learning activities that encourage students to investigate areas of plant and soil science. Students are introduced to the following areas of plant and soil science: plant growth, reproduction and propagation, photosynthesis and respiration, diseases and pests of plants and their management, biotechnology, the basic components and types of soil, soil tillage, and conservation.

  • 2 Semesters (1 credit per semester)
  • Dual Credit with Ivy Tech
  • Fulfills Science Requirement

Third Course:

ALS: Plant and Soil Science

This course integrates the study of advanced biology, chemistry and earth science in an agricultural context. Material focuses on the chemical reactions of matter in living and nonliving materials while stressing the unifying themes of chemistry and the development of physical and mathematical models of matter and its interactions. Students will examine the internal structure, functions, genetics and processes of living plant organisms and their interaction with the environment.

  • 2 Semesters (1 credit per semester)
  • Dual Credit with Ivy Tech
  • Fulfills Science Requirement

Final Course:

Agriculture Research Capstone

    • Senior class
    • 2 Semesters (1 credit per semester)
